Want to help Conclave expand? Vote for it on Steam Greenlight!

If you're not familiar with Steam, it's a very popular service that allows gamers to discover, purchase, and download games to their PCs. Steam Greenlight allows independent developers like us to submit games for consideration. If enough people vote for Conclave, Valve (the company behind Steam) will work with us to distribute it to Steam's sizable audience.

This means that if we're green-lit, we'll be releasing a desktop client for Conclave. We have a working alpha -- it's one of the behind-the-scenes projects we've been working on recently -- and it's pretty much identical to the browser version in gameplay and appearance. (Technically, it contains its own dedicated browser.) We expect that anyone who buys the campaign through one version will be able to play it in the other, and players will be able to form cross-platform parties.

Voting for us on Steam Greenlight will have another important benefit for all of you that currently play the game. As an independent developer, we rely on the support of players to fund future development; the more players that find about and purchase Conclave, the faster we can complete the new quests and features we've got in our queue for you.

So if you're a Steam user (or are interested in trying it out), we'd love it if you checked out our Greenlight submission at the link above. Thanks!

When do we get to test the client?

If all goes as planned, we should have a testable release available sometime in March.

I'm sure a lot of us will go vote for you there if it helps. Conclave is one of my favorite online games. But, given Steam's reputation for being associated with rootkits, why would you want to be on their site? It seems you are doing a much better job earning player trust and respect here.

This is the first time we've heard about an association between Steam and rootkits, honestly. Just googled a bit, and it seems like certain games distributed through Steam over the years have had rootkit-like behavior. Perhaps Valve could be more aggressive about policing that sort of thing, but that might not be feasible for them, and it doesn't seem like it's something particular to Steam. Any game download could potentially be malicious when it comes down to it, which is one reason we're happy to offer the no-download HTML5/JS client. Is there more to the story that we're missing?

Like a lot of small indie teams, we don't have nearly the leverage Valve does when it comes to spreading the word about a game. We've handled that largely on our own for the past few years, but it's still tough for us to get noticed amidst all the other games out there; we've had to spend more time than we'd like on promotion and marketing. We hope that placing the game on services like Steam will enable us to focus more in the long run on improving the game and creating new content for it.

I might suggest finding a popular youtube let's player to ask if they'd be interested in doing a "let's look at" for the game. There are a crapload of them, and I'm sure a lot have interest in these kinds of games.

We've reached out to some, but most seem pretty swamped with requests, and it takes more effort for them to show off a multiplayer Conclave experience than a single-player game. Let us know if you come across a YouTuber that you think would be a good fit, though; we might have missed someone.
