Flanked with hidden enemy?

Postby Maize » Tue Apr 08, 2014 10:58 am

This may not be a bug, but without knowing what the design intention was, it's hard to say.

If enemies are flanking a character but hidden, that character still gets the "flanked" icon. This is kind of a giveaway of the position of the enemies in many circumstances, and also seems like a weird thing if you're trying to picture what it would mean in the game world. I mean, the character should certainly suffer the flanking penalty, but they shouldn't *know* that they're flanked, if you see what I mean.

Anyway, as I said, it might not be a bug, but it seemed worth bringing up in case that's unintentional.

That's a bug. We haven't had a chance to fix it yet since it's a tricky one to get right.

Actually, if you read the description of flanking, they shouldn't:

A flanked combatant has enemies next to it on either side, far enough apart that defending against either one is difficult - and the distraction of doing so makes the combatant vulnerable to attacks from other sources too. - https://www.playconclave.com/codex/quic ... al_flanked

If one of the combatants performing the flank is hidden, then their opponent doesn't realize they are surrounded and wouldn't be distracted.

Thinking about this a bit more, it seems like the correct behavior would be to have an unseen entity not apply the flanking debuff.

However, when the unseen entity loses his Unseen effect, you should check position immediately before resolving anything else. This keeps rogues from being able to stay invisible and safe, yet still applying the debuff, and also lets them benefit from flanking their enemy when they decide to make their first attack.
